The Bedford High School’s Social Studies Department’s 20th Annual Winter History Fair took place on Thursday, January 19 from 6:30 to 9 PM. The event displayed a wide variety of carefully crafted projects on historical topics that fit under this year’s theme of “Revolution, Reaction, and Reform in History.”
From documentaries, performances, websites, papers, or exhibits, the juniors in the high honors history classes showed their talents in researching, craftsmaking, editing, and more. Some students chose to participate in the extracurricular competition of presenting their projects at districts which took place in late February, with some qualifying for the state competition in early April. (See list below)
All around the BHS library, large handmade exhibits filled up the room, each of them uniquely describing their own historical event that resonated with them. When asked about why they had chosen their topic that fits under the theme, students commented on their goals to bring more information and awareness to interesting topics such as conflicts in the Middle East, lobotomies, and acts that represent people with disabilities to name a few.
The craftsmanship on all of the projects shined through on each display in the library, with some students hand making their own figurines. Other project types such as documentaries played in the classrooms, with showings going on followed by a panel that asked questions about the videos.
Overall, when asked about the main issue that students faced when working on their projects, the answer that was most common was time management. Students said that they had to overcome their procrastination and be able to focus hard to finish their projects, but they commented on their pride regarding their efforts as they presented their final works. “We had so many ideas in our head, and not enough time to manage it all. But once we sat down and planned out our time for weeks ahead, little by little we began to start managing it all perfectly,” one student remarked.
At their regional competition that took place at Leicester Middle School, fifteen out of the twenty-three projects advanced to the state finals, with another six projects receiving honorable mentions, and five winning special awards for different sub-categories related to their topics.
