From Kanopy

An Inspector Calls

One of our top picks. This movie is an emotional rollercoaster with many twists and a deep plot. We follow a family and an inspector through the events of a woman’s suicide story. With spooky curveballs and a haunting ending, this is both a heartbreaking and hair raising mystery.

The Haunting (1963)

Another notable movie to add to your water later list. A creepy classic in black and white film, this movie will have you on the edge of your seat. The Haunting introduces us to the Hill House, a supposedly haunted house where a group of four young men and women follow a private investigator through the house. The movie is perfect for a late fall night and has some great jump scares throughout it.

The Ring

The plots for some may be simple but it is also effective and scary. The music and sound effects are also creepy and really add to the mood. It was incredible and enjoyable to watch. A story of a video tape that kills and as a journalist that crumbles at the site of a clip board trying to save her son that she has accidentally given the tape to. A race against the clock is a tried and true method.

From Netflix

Next we have Netflix as a top contender with many horror and Halloween movies to watch this season. With honorary mentions of Tarot, Death Becomes Her, and Fear Street Prom Queen, we have a mix of family watches and good jump scares.

Wendel and Wild

Fun animated movie that is so much more than Halloween. Good cosy-spooky Halloween vibes. It’s fun and makes really nice use of metaphor. A film that centres black Americans who are both symbolically and directly taking on various aspects of post-colonial systemic injustice

Ouija

Perfect jump scare story of ghost possession and fun twists and turns. A girl commits suicide her friend are scared and grieving, however one girl is skeptical. They use the ouija board to talk to their departed friend to get closer and end up connecting with a different person. Haunting, interesting, with good plot twists. This was a wonderful movie.

The Curse of Bridge Hollow

A wonderful funny Halloween movie that is perfect for the whole family. With a sweet father daughter story line this movie was super cute. When an ancient demon is reawakened, a father daughter duo must be ready.

From Disney +

Disney+, though lacking in horrors and thrillers, has a large selection of family friendly Halloween movies. So if you’re looking for a family-friendly watch on a cozy night-in, this platform is the perfect choice.

The Sixth Sense

A beautiful spooky movie about a social worker and a young boy who has a mysterious sixth sense. This plot was engaging thought provoking and deep. The connections, plot twists underlying themes, were immaculate.

Haunted Mansion

A spooky family friendly movie of a family who go stay at a creepy house because of their workaholic real estate agent father. As things go wrong Jim, the father, must go on a journey to save his wife. A spooky comedy,  I truly was not prepared for how enjoyable this would be.
