On May 8th, The Choral POMS Recognition Concert was hosted in the auditorium by the BHS Performing Arts Department. It was the last performance of the year for most of the participants, except for the Rolling Tones, the coed acapella group that has plans to perform at the Acapocalypse on May 31st at the Chelmsford High School.
The concert opened up with a few words from Ms. O’Toole and Ms. Faulstich, the director. They then invited the first group of performers: Bucapella, the all male acapella group, to the stage. Led by senior John Mitchell, they sang “I Want It That Way” by the Backstreet Boys. Out of the 8 boys in the group, each one of them had their own solo part within the song.
After the Bucapellas wrapped up, the all female acapella group led by seniors Jennie Noh, Violet Gould, Helen Canciello, and Yoana Dimitrova, the Bellachords, took the stage to sing “Wannabe” by the Spice Girls. Brooke D’Andrea, Emma Cohen, and Sayontika Bhattacharya all sang a solo part.
Lastly for the acapella groups, the Rolling Tones stole the show with “Die With a Smile” by Lady Gaga and Bruno Mars, sung by the talented soloists Joseph Choi and Yoana Dimitrova. Then Jennie Noh followed up with an impressive performance of “Disturbia” by Rihanna.
Once the acapella performances were over, the Concert Choir began their songs, accompanied by Cedric Last and Hanna Suzuki. They sang “Love is an Open Door” from the movie Frozen, “Viva La Vida” by Coldplay, and “Rewrite the Stars” from the movie The Greatest Showman. Matthew Choi, Asalie Brosgol, and Daisy Bhatt all performed a solo.
The Honors Choir took a different approach to the genre of their songs, performing the classical “Lacrimosa” by Mozart, “I Want to be Where Your Barefoot Walks” by Childs, and “Bridge Over Troubled Water” by Simon & Garfunkel, with John Mitchell and Teresa Silver as soloists. To conclude the chorus, the combined BHS choirs performed “Duel of the Fates” by John Williams from Star Wars.
They ended the night with awards, recognizing the seniors in the Music Major Program. Those seniors were Dylan DeJesus, Yoana Dimitrova, and Matthew Choi.
The directors awards were given out to Liam Green and Helen Canciello.
There were two POMS awards, The Keith Phinney Vocal Award and The Barry Low Spirit Award. The recipients of the Keith Phinney Vocal Awards were Yoana Dimitrova, Jennie Noh, and Violet Gould. And the Barry Low Spirit Award was given to John Mitchell.
Congratulations to everyone in Chorus and the Performing Arts Department for a great year and an even better final performance!
