On Wednesday November 13, Senior Alyx Rossi signed her letter of intent to play softball at Boston College next year. In the small world of Bedford sports, an athlete getting recruited to play at a major college is quite rare, making Rossi’s achievement even more notable.
Rossi, a left handed pitcher who spent her first two years of high school at Austin Prep before returning to Bedford, led the team to the state semifinals last spring. Along the way the girls knocked out a Tewksbury team that had been to the state finals in back to back years, with Rossi coming off an injury to pitch a 2-0 shutout.
In addition to the deep tourney run, Rossi amassed some impressive hardware. She won Dual County League Foley Player of the Year, and was twice named Eastern Massachusetts Player of the Week. As a captain, coach Dennis Walsh described her as “driven, serious, and dedicated.”
She also posted some eye popping stats. Rossi started 17 games, giving up a total of 16 hits across those 116 innings for an ERA of 0.12 and a batting average against of 0.043. She threw four complete game no hitters, and had ten or more strikeouts in 11 outings, amassing 278 strikeouts across the season. She had one game against Acton-Boxborough where she struck out all 21 batters she faced.
Alyx herself noted that she has been playing softball since age five, and began club softball at age ten. Like many high level athletes, Alyx pointed out that she has dropped other sports and interests to focus on softball. She especially noted basketball, soccer, and volleyball, but feels that the trade off is worth it. She is also excited to be back in Bedford Public Schools, explaining that her time at a prep school “wasn’t working to help me improve,” and that the school “wasn’t a good fit.”
Looking ahead, Alyx is excited about her time at BC, explaining that she “used to go to BC games when she was little,” and that “being close to home is a huge perk.” She also feels comfortable with the coaching staff.
Beyond softball, Alyx is excited to attend a strong academic school, and noted that she plans to enroll in the Carroll School of Management, hoping to move into a career in business or management beyond her softball career.
