Meet Mrs. Weller-Fahy, Bedford High’s New Librarian

The Bedford Lookout recently interviewed Bedford High School’s newest hirees,  Mrs. Weller-Fahy,  the new Librarian. Read on to find out more about her!

What made you decide to become a school librarian?

There is nothing better than introducing students to a new book or author that gets them excited about reading. I had a librarian do that for me when I was a kid and wanted to share that gift with other students.

What is one thing you are excited about for this school year?

Switching jobs 2 months into the school year isn’t exactly what I had planned, but I am so glad I’m at BHS.   I am excited about putting down roots and making connections with everyone here.

Where did you work before?

I was the librarian/digital literacy teacher at both middle schools in Chelmsford.  The commute was lovely (less than a mile from my house) but traveling between two schools didn’t allow me to connect with students or staff.

What is your favorite thing about being a librarian?

One of my favorite things in the world is helping students find a book that they’ll enjoy reading.  I find the organization of the library very calming.  Everything has a specific place it belongs in the collection.

Can you tell us a bit about your path to becoming a librarian? Where did you go to school?

I’ve been to so many colleges!  I have an Associates in Liberal Arts from Rose State College in Oklahoma and another Associates in Culinary Arts from the University of Alaska in Anchorage.

My husband was in the military. Between his deployments and moving every 3-4 years, it was easier for me to stay home with the boys.  After he retired and we moved to Massachusetts and I finished my undergraduate and graduate degrees. My Undergraduate Degree (Psychology with a Minor in Education)  is from the University of Massachusetts, Lowell, and finally, my Masters in Library Science is from Salem State.

Do you have any children and/or pets?

I have 2 boys.  My oldest is studying Game Design at RIT and my youngest is a Junior in High School.  We also have 2 dogs (Mellow and Japer) as well as Darby the guinea pig and Smaug the leopard gecko.

Do you have any fun hobbies?

I really enjoy traveling, cooking and organizing.  What do I organize?  Where to travel, what to cook and ways to keep my space less chaotic.

What is your favorite show/movie?

My husband and I enjoy watching British crime shows.  Did you know you can stream a ton of them on Hoopla?  I have to watch “While You Were Sleeping” every holiday season.

What is one place that you would love to visit and/or your favorite place you have already visited?

We had an opportunity to live in Germany for almost 4 years.  I loved everything about living in Europe and would go back in an instant.

What is your favorite season?

One thing I love about living up here is that each season brings its own rewards.  I can’t choose just one, so I’d have to say the beauty of spring and fall and fall are my favorites.

What is your favorite food?

I love any and all seafood but I really miss Tex-Mex from my favorite restaurant in Oklahoma.

What is your favorite fall activity?

We enjoy hosting Thanksgiving dinner.  Over 20 years ago, we started a tradition of  inviting Airmen in my husband’s squadron or anyone who needed somewhere to go for the holiday.  It’s a lovely gathering and gives me an opportunity to cook my favorite meal.
